50k Words and Being Kind to Yourself - Weekly Devlog #21
A look back on the week that was...
Current game word count: 50 900 (+ 1941 since last devlog)
Huh, 50k words... that's pretty sick. I remember when I was impressed that I had 10k of those. Seems like so long ago. And now my game has more words in it than the majority of the entries in the Narnia series. Whoa.
I'm keeping this devlog short, because I have a lot to do at the moment. Something I'm still learning, but progressively getting better at, is being kind to myself. I've been dangerously close many times in my life to burn out, since I tend to go all-in when I'm passionate about things. It's taken a lot of therapy in order to learn how to manage it.
So whenever I see people beating themselves up over lack of progress, I always go "Be kind to yourself."
It doesn't mean "be lazy", it means "be reasonable". I wish I had the time and energy to write 5k-10k words a week like some absolute madlads do, but it's just not possible living the life I live right now. And that's fine. Progress is progress. Sometimes progress is 100 words, if even that. And that's alright.
So in the spirit of that, I'm ending the devlog here, because I'm tired and want to eat some Valentine's ice cream with my wife. :)
By the way!
Check out these icons I've added to the fast travel screen. I noticed when watching let's plays of my demo that several people missed things during the game's free time phases. Hopefully this will be helpful in that regard, knowing where characters are hanging out and all.
Finally, some good news. I'm dropping a new demo a lot earlier than anticipated! Going back and forth, it ultimately feels like having something playable is preferable to having nothing. And I really want to show all the upgrades to you guys.
So... maybe before February ends? How does that sound? :)
All my love,

*chanting* New demo! New demo! New demo!
Congrats on hitting the 50k milestone. And thank you for the "be reasonable" reminder, it's something I feel a lot of us devs need. Week after week, I often end up focusing on all the things that were not finished, and forget to look at everything we did do instead. Slow progress is still progress!
Was hoping you’d get excited about that! 😁
Thank you so much! And you’re very welcome. It’s such an important thing and it gets easily overlooked. 😊 Let’s be proud of the awesome work we do!!
